The Graduation

*Prologue*

Two down

I can hardly wait for the day when all of them can feel the pain like I once did. Who did they think I was? A guardian angel? Too good. A mortal? Nah-too imperfect. They do notknow who I am, and they will never know. I am the devil. Yes, the lord of evil...

*--------*

"Three months to go, and we'e off to freedom land!", Damon said to his bestfriend Sahly.

"Was that you, Damon?", Faith asked. "Since when have you taken interest in leaving school?" Shaly and Hestie gigled.

"Come on, guys. You can walk faster than that!", Stephen muttered. It was a stormy Friday afternoon and this gang was heading to their usual after-school hangout.

The place, as usual was jampacked. The 5 friends Shaly, the student council president, Stephen, star basketball player, Faith, voted 'Prom Queen', Damon, most likely to be class valedictorian and Hestie, quiet and cheerful headed towards their usual corner table. They've been friends since pre-schoo, with the exception of Hestie who moved in just this senior year.

Gossips over burgers and fries - that was their most enjoyed activity. No one among them knew that the next few days would drastically change their lives.

*--------*

Saturday morning, Sahly woke up with a scream. Hanging from her windowsill was a smelly old dummy holding a note that says 'To the most popular girl in campus...you're next!"

Next to what?, she thought. Suddenly, the phone rang. It was Damon.

"Sahly, you're not going to believe this."

"What is it, Damon?"

"Someone left this very realistic dummy on my windowsill. His head was hanging limp and his hand was-"

"You don't have to describe. I know what it looks like. I got the very same one. And correction: it's not realistic"

"He was holding a note that says 'to the class nerd...you're next!' Do you know what this means, ahly?" Damon was practically shouting.

"Calm down, Dame. It's probably just another joke. Throw it out and bury your head under a pillow." Sahly hung up the phone before Damon can get another word out.

The phone rang again. She tried to ignore the ringing but the caller was persistent. "What is it, Damon?", Sahly demanded without bothering to say hello.

"Um, Sahly, this is Hestie."

"Oh, sorry, Hes," Sahly's early morning cheerfulness flew out of the window. She doesn't know why but she never really liked talking to Hestie. Nevertheless, the news her friend brought made her feel even worse - far worse.

"Have you heard the new?" Hestie asked in her no-nonsense voice.

"Well, is it worth hearing?'

"Faith is dead."

"That's not a nice thing to joke about, Hestie." But someho, Sahly felt her heart pound.

" I'm serious. The brakes in her car were tampered. According to the police, someone did it. It wasn't an accident." After she got the words out, Hestie broke down. She was crying hysterically.

Sahly couldn't do anything. Her whole body felt numb. Without another word, she hung up the phone.

Faith's gone. How could that be? College seemedso promising for all of us. We're not the best of friends but we've been together for so long. I was the first to know when he dumped Damon, but she never really knew about me and Stephen. I never got around to returning the prom dress she lent me. I never got the chance to say sorry for everything. Jumbled thoughts filled Sahly's mind. Then she remembered, and all her grief turned to fear. She glanced at the dummy. "You're next.", she read out loud. "I'm next."

*--------*

After the burial, the four friends went straight home.

"Hah, home alone!" Stephen's parents were out of town, and he was glad for the time he can spend without nagging company. Turning his thoughts away from Faith's death, he headed towards the kitchen to get some snacks. As he opened the refrigerator door, the phone rang.

    "Hello?"

"Hi, Stephen, how was the burial?", a husky vioce asked.

"Who's this?", Stephen was getting nervous.

"Ooh, a little scared, huh? You don't have to know me. Just a warning: look out, you might be caught unaware..." And the line went dead.

"Hey, who are you?! Don't ever call again!", Stephen exclaimed. Turning around, he saw Hestie running towards him. "Stephen, you've got to help me! Someone - someone is after me! Someone is trying to kill me!"

"Calm down, Hes. Calm down. Now tell me what happened." Stephen said as he reached for his friend's hand.

Sudden;y, Hestie let out an ear-piercing scream. Stephen spun around, and everything went black.
